It's bad enough for some [prop aircrafts](https://www.energy-xprt.com/companies/mission-newenergy-limited-36048) to be referred to as being powered by [elastic band](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159352/mission-newenergy-debt-free-focused-on-biofuel-joint-venture-60797.html). Now the cynics could begin having a dig at commercial aircraft flying on whatever from cooking oil to melted algae.

With the civil aviation industry under increasing pressure from rising oil rates and ecological legislation, the race is on to find viable alternatives to conventional [kerosene](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/51278-86) and these up until now seem to boil down to different types of biofuel.

Not surprisingly, the first trials of alternative fuel were [initiated](https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/51278-86) by British air travel pioneer, Sir Richard Branson, whose Virgin [Atlantic](https://www.abnnewswire.net/companies/en/31347/%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%A9%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%97-Mission-NewEnergy-%E0%B8%88%E0%B8%B3%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%94.html/4) started London to Amsterdam flights with minimal [biofuel](https://www.pinterest.com.au/missionnewenergy/) use in 2008. This was quickly followed by [Lufthansa](https://www.zonebourse.com/cours/action/MISSION-NEWENERGY-LIMITED-8557641/) and Air New Zealand who each used various blends of routine fuel and bio derivatives including some from made from which can grow in soil thought about too poor for growing mainstream foodstuffs.

Recently, US aerospace giant Boeing, Brazilian aeronautical significant Embraer and the Sao Paulo state Research Support Foundation relocated to [perform](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608) research and advancement into using biofuels to power jet airliners. It was reported that Brazilian airline companies Azul, Gol, TAM and Trip would serve as strategic specialists for the task.

The most recent airline company to start exploring with new fuels is the Alaska Air Group which has conducted internal US flights utilizing a mix of 80 % petroleum based fuel and 20% [biofuel](https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/159346/mission-newenergy-delivers-maiden-biodiesel-production-to-global-oil-major-24476.html) made from cooking oil.
One really encouraging development has been the move far from biofuels which contend head on with food customers thus avoiding a rate spiral.
Hopefully in the future, airline companies and motorists will [focus biofuel](https://www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/shares/asx-mbt/mission-newenergy-limited/share-price) intake on [non-food sources](https://www.zonebourse.com/cours/action/MISSION-NEWENERGY-LIMITED-8557641/) such as [jatropha](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/ipos/overview?dealId=804419-65608) and algae.
